Aiden Is Back In School

Image
It's back to school time and learning is in full swing. Some kids are getting more screen time (the good kind) as more schools roll-out iPads. Here's where a company called eSpark is making a difference helping teachers achieve goals for their students. Using the technology of iPads in the classroom, eSpark is focused on education that is student-centered—working with the needs of an individual student. Apps are vetted through a strict rubric to ensure Common Core alignment, academic rigor, and engagement. The Prisoner of Car...

Why Zero Calorie Drinks Are a Hidden Danger

Whether you drink sugary soft drinks or those touting no-sugar/zero calories, you get the same result. Weight gain . Contrary to popular belief, studies have found that artificial sweeteners such as aspartame (aka NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful) can— Stimulate your appetite Increase carbohydrate cravings Trigger fat storage Cause weight gain  Remind me again—why you use artificial sweeteners? In one recent study, saccharin and aspartame were found to cause greater weight gain than sugar. If that doesn't make you pause and rethink drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks, what about the reported side effects?  Huh? The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the green light for aspartame to be added to carbonated beverages and extended approval to all foods in 1996. They consider the artificial sweetener safe for human consumption. However, on the FDA's own site, 75 percent of the overall complaints reported are adverse reactions to aspartame, which include— Migraines/heada...

Giving: A Show of Gratitude

Image
As Thanksgiving and Christmas approach, we tend to look beyond ourselves and think about giving. Webster's Dictionary defines give : to make a present of... However, give is just a word with no feeling behind it. We add the emotion from something in our heart. A genuine attitude for giving might best be offered with gratitude : a feeling of appreciation or thanks. Attitude is one of my roots of health and one way to improve your attitude is to show gratitude. Volunteer your time to the less fortunate. Giving to others helps us forget ourselves and our troubles. It tends to reinforce a thankful feeling within. At this time of year one favorite family tradition has been to fill a shoebox with goodies and items for a child living in a third-world country who lives in dire circumstances and a seemingly hopeless situation. We accomplish this through  Operation Christmas Child , a project of Samaritan's Purse. What is Operation Christmas Child? Through a simple gift of a shoebox ...
